Brisbane’s Best Edible Gardens

By: Renee Templeton, 15 March 2019

There are some incredible edible gardens begging to be explored across Brisbane. Find a fragrant community garden near you, take the family on a fruit and veg hunt, or marvel at the beauty of a carefully cultivated inner-city display. Eat your heart out with our selection of Brisbane’s best edible gardens.

The Epicurious Garden

It’s tempting to munch and crunch your way through this beautiful garden set in the heart of South Bank Parklands. Spread across a 1500m² plot, the garden was designed to educate and inspire home gardeners. A team of staff and 14 volunteers maintain the garden weekly – if you stop by between 7am - 2pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, you can collect free produce from the garden’s harvest cart.

Jane Street Community Garden

This West End garden is all about bringing the community together to learn about sustainable living. Run by a non-profit organisation and group of community members, the garden grows around 200 different varieties of edible plants, including fruit and vegetables, herbs, and salad greens. Pop your head in to wonder at the work this team does for the community, or enquire about how you can help in the garden.

Northey Street Markets and City Farm Nursery

There’s always a great vibe and community feel at this busy market. Come along to see the community garden and learn about sustainable living. Located within the markets, the City Farm Nursery is a great place to start if you’re looking to create your own edible garden at home. Choose from herbs, veggie seedlings and bush tucker plants, or try your luck with a native beehive or worm farm.

Brisbane Public Harvest

This is a superb google map, that pinpoints where fresh and free fruit and herbs are available for the public. Looking for bananas? Click on ‘bananas’ and you’ll be given a location in Brisbane where you can find them. The map currently has everything from kaffir lime leaves and coconuts, to mandarins and mulberries. Scour the suburbs with the family to find fresh ingredients for a colourful and chemical-free meal.

Falling Fruit

Falling Fruit is another map-like platform that highlights where you can find fresh fruit and veg up for grabs in public spaces. All you need to do is key your suburb into the search engine and find what’s available close to you.
