Is This Australia’s Best Fish ’n’ Chips?

The newspaper wrapping might be hard to come by these days, but the Aussie tradition of fish and chips by the water is one of the great loves of our sunkissed lifestyle. Local takeaways and gourmet restaurants alike serve up the iconic dish that has been a steadfast favourite for generations, and there are even Fish and Chips Awards to help us wade through the endless offerings. 

So who does reign supreme in this hotly contested field of deep-fried, golden goodness? According to Escape’s Emma Markezic, the best fish and chips in Australia is right here in NSW.

Pelican Rocks Cafe in Greenwell Point on the South Coast is the current NSW champ in the Australian Fish and Chips Awards in both the Judge’s Choice and People's Choice categories. It was also the People's Choice Award Winner for 2018 and the Judges Choice Award Winner for 2017.

Pelican Rocks Café also won both the Best Judged and the Peoples Choice at the last Sydney Fish Market Seafood Excellence Awards and took out the top gong in Wotif’s 2019 Uniquely Aussie Awards.

Who knew the humble fish and chips was such serious business?

Set in a small, serene coastal village near Nowra, Pelican Rocks is a humble, local eatery perched across from the water where namesake birds frolic and fishing boats come in. They pride themselves on their ambient location and the freshest fish. Fans are known to drive for hours to get a fix of their famous food made all the more delicious by the idyllic atmosphere.
