KU Children’s Services: Fostering Your Child’s Sense of Belonging, Being, and Becoming

By: The ellaslist Team, 04 August 2024

We now know that early childhood is a pivotal phase of development where your child will learn through play and build social connections setting them up for lifelong learning. Thankfully, KU Children’s Services has seen the importance of Early Childhood Education since its beginning 129 years ago and it is evident when you step into a KU Children’s Services centre.

KU Children’s Services: Fostering Your Child’s Sense of Belonging, Being, and Becoming

KU Children’s Services is one of the largest not-for-profit providers of early childhood education and care with centres and programs across NSW, ACT, VIC and QLD. KU pride themselves on giving your child an exceptional start to their education journey in an environment that fosters creativity, independence and joy.

KU has been around since 1895, so they well and truly know what they are doing for children in the crucial early childhood period. Each centre is encouraged to develop an area of interest, and that could be something like a connection to the natural environment, sustainability or understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural perspectives.

KU Children’s Services goes beyond childcare delivering the highest quality early childhood education of all of the services in the sector, championed by their experienced and caring teachers and educators. All centres follow the 'Belonging, Being, and Becoming' framework, a cornerstone of the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) in Australia, and take a play-based approach to learning.

Belonging: The KU Children’s Services Educators

KU’s team of high-quality teachers and educators strive to connect and build a strong relationship with your child supporting them in their ongoing development. In fact, they revel in being the place where your child “has a voice”. For anyone who has heard the word "no" over and over again you’re probably thinking, hmmm my child has definitely found their voice, but it’s more than that. This is the kind of place where they can discover their sense of self. At KU they are encouraged to make their unique mark in the world - and to be heard as they make it.

What is Play-Based Learning?

Sounds fun, doesn’t it? Well, it’s more than just playing, although this is at the very heart of it. Your child is likely very motivated to play, therefore learning through play is an extension of this, where they are supported to explore and make sense of themselves and their world. It builds on children’s natural curiosity to learn and extends their development through activities that they find enjoyable. At KU, the qualified teachers and educators will be guided by your child and plan strategies that build on their individual strengths and interests. Their minds will be enriched with science experiments, early numeracy activities such as counting and measurement, and early literacy activities such as reading, drawing and writing, all through play.

Being in the Present: The KU Environment

Each KU centre is unique but what they all have in common is that they want the best outcomes for your child - knowing full well that every child is different. So how can they possibly achieve this? Well, they understand that this will be best achieved through the relationships between children, families and their staff. They aim to create a home-like learning environment for your child within their centre. Not only do they give your child this innate sense of belonging, their centres just happen to be beautifully warm and inviting too.

These state-of-the-art centres have been designed with natural light, timber floors, forest-like play areas and lots of natural elements. All the stuff that kids love, such as sand, water, bark, twigs, stones, branches and grass! And you’ll rarely see anything plastic, their architecturally designed playgrounds will often blend into the natural environment. This encourages children to simply ‘be’ in the present moment - something children do so well but in this busy modern world, aren’t always given the time of day to do!

Becoming Part of the World: the Activities Offered at KU

At KU your child will never utter the words “I’m bored” as they have many opportunities with a range of activities including gardening, arts and crafts, music and movement, plus sand and water play. The KU touch is all about acknowledging that your child’s education is life-long but that it’s never too early to feel like an active member of society. KU fosters this sense of becoming and spends the time making sure your child has their own voice in this world- and that they feel heard.
