As we continue to claw our way back from the knock-on effects of the COVID pandemic, and try to prop up some of the worst-affected industries, the NSW Government is considering offering free meal vouchers for families.

The $100 vouchers to spend in cafes, restaurants and pubs would give the state’s hospitality sector a much needed boost, while giving families a lift with the opportunity to dine out for nix. A win win!

The ambitious proposal would set the government back around $500 million in a bid to offset the impact of the pandemic-induced economic recession on a hospitality sector that faced a devastating demise early on in the saga.

“We get how tough it is for families at the moment, what a stressful year everyone’s had, how tough it is for small businesses,” NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said in a radio interview. “If we did go down that path... it would be a positive thing.”

Vouchers would only be made available to residents older than 18 and people living alone would receive $50 vouchers.

Ms Berejiklian couldn’t confirm the likelihood the plan would go ahead but said it was under serious consideration.

Rumour has it the restaurant voucher initiative already been signed off by the government’s Expenditure Review Committee, which is chaired by NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet, however it is yet to be presented to cabinet. It could be announced at the state’s COVID-19 budget to be handed down on 17th November so cross your fingers!
