Sesame Street Desserts At New Sydney Cafe

By: Sarah Tayler, 10 May 2019

A new Taiwanese cafe is serving up desserts with a difference. Roji Monster Ice Cream Shop in Burwood has created colourful shaved-ice masterpieces depicting monsters which look very similar to the puppets of ‘60s kids TVs show, Sesame Street.

The monster desserts come in five different flavours (milk, uji maccha, French cocoa, black sesame and a seasonal special) with edible googly eyes and a choice of two different toppings to finish them off. Toppings include mixed nuts, chocolate chips, chocolate sauce, Oreo cream cheese, honeycomb rice dumplings, saffron and lychee jelly, and cornflakes.

If shaved ice isn’t for you, Roji Monster Ice Cream Shop also offers monster waffles, marshmallow toast, Japanese Dango (sweet dumplings made of rice flour served on a skewer) and soft-serve ice cream. Plus, a range of drinks such as the ever-popular Maccha lattes (hot in the winter, iced in the summer).

The new Burwood cafe opened in February this year and is proving very popular — there are often lines out front before they even open. The cafe has a minimalistic design with decor reflecting its Asian roots. Roji Monster Ice Cream Shop is open from 12pm to 10pm seven days a week. The Monster shaved ice is from $14, other desserts from $9, and drinks from $7.50.

It is worth knowing before you go: this cafe has a minimum spend of $10 per person.
