Six of the Best Parks in Sydney

By: Serina Hajje, 30 July 2021

Not to be confused with playgrounds, parks in Sydney refer to stunning sprawling acres of rolling lawns that are perfect for kicking a soccer ball on a Saturday arvo, having a picnic in the summertime or simply letting the kids run wild with abandon.

Lucky for us Sydneysiders, our city is full of gorgeous parks to get the whole family outdoors and soaking up some greenery. Here are six of the best parks in Sydney to check out.

1. Royal Botanic Garden Sydney

Royal Botanic Garden Sydney
First up on the list of the best parks in Sydney is Royal Botanic Garden Sydney.

If you're looking for a park in Sydney right in the heart of the city, you can't go past the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney. Sydney's premier park is Australia's oldest botanic garden and is an utterly stunning natural landscape. Along with offering amazing views of the city and harbour, the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney hosts events, tours, kids activities and more throughout the year, and is a great location to just get lost amongst nature.

2. Blaxland Riverside Park

Blaxland Riverside Park
As part of the Olympic precinct, Blaxland Riverside Park is touted as the biggest and best park in Sydney.

Different play areas in Blaxland Riverside Park allow for close supervision while you explore each individual element. There is a great water play area (bring old swimmers as the kids love to slide down the sloppy sides resulting in many worn bottoms), climbing frame, swings, tunnels, rope swing, flying fox and more. A café is available in peak periods and you can access other parts of the Olympic precinct via ferry.

3. Bungarribee Park

Bungarribee Park
Welcome to one of Sydney's favourite parks.

Western Sydney Parklands has a 200-hectare park with an awesome playground for kids including some of the biggest slides in town. Climb the 14-metre-high play tower, glide along the 50-metre-long flying fox, and spend hours on the giant swings, water play, walking and cycling tracks. Bungarribee Park has 20 barbecues and 13 picnic shelters so you can pack a picnic and make a day of it. If you want to include your furry family members the park has one of the largest off-leash dog areas in Sydney too.

4. Australian Botanical Garden Mount Annan

The Australian Botanic Garden, Mount Annan
Parks, playgrounds, cycling paths and more are on offer at The Australian Botanic Garden Mount Annan.

The Australian Botanic Garden Mount Annan is such a huge Sydney park with things to do for the whole family. Acres and acres of walking and cycling paths and an amazing fenced playground with flying foxes, swings and rope bridges. There is also a mountain bike trail, café, plant bank and numerous themed gardens.  Entry is free and the gardens are well worth the drive from anywhere in Sydney. Picnic shelters can be reserved for gatherings and don’t forget to visit the strange but fascinating blue tree.

5. Sydney Park

Sydney Park
Sydney park offers one of the best cycling paths and parks in Sydney.

Conveniently located near train stations and on major access roads right near the city, Sydney Park offers a cycling centre with an amazing bike track, large open areas for walking, cycling and ball games as well as an off-leash dog park.  There is a small café, toilets, a lake full of eels and lots of bushlands to explore. Children will love the playground with a large slide hill, a wall of swings, a rope bridge, elevated sandpits and a tactile garden to stimulate the senses.

6. Carss Bush Park

Carss Bush Park Sydney
Carss Bush Park is another Sydney park to add to your list.

Hidden down a quiet suburban street there is a picturesque spot on Kogarah Bay called Carss Bush Park. There are swimming areas, an enclosed sandy beach, a fantastic café (and less fancy kiosk), lots of walking paths, park areas and a variety of playgrounds to make a day here fun for all the family.
