The New Barbie Range That❜s More Inclusive Than Ever

By: Tully Rosenberg, 19 March 2020

As much as we love playing make-believe with America’s sweetheart, Barbie has long been criticized for her cliched looks and unrealistic proportions. But a new decade and greater awareness have inspired an evolution for the iconic doll.

The new Barbie Fashionistas 2020 Collection is smashing stereotypes with a range of dolls that are more diverse than ever. Showcasing an inclusive range, it includes a Barbie with vitiligo, a condition that causes the loss of skin pigment in blotches, and ones with no hair, a prosthetic limb and a wheelchair.

Mattel worked with a dermatologist to make sure vitiligo was properly represented in the design and continued to work with experts to ensure the accuracy of each of their diverse dolls. There is also a new-age Ken doll with lush long locks.

Taking a more holistic approach, Mattel wants to celebrate "a multi-dimensional view of beauty and fashion" through new additions to its Barbie Fashionistas line, which now includes a variety of appearances with different hair textures, skin shades, clothing and body types.

With more than 170 new looks released over the last five years, Barbie has evolved to better represent the real world with a more authentic and inclusive offering. Now that more little girls might see themselves reflected in the Barbie range, life in plastic is fantastic.

Currently the Barbie Fashionistas are not stocked by Australia retailers but we've seen them on eBay and Amazon!
