What To Do On Sydney’s Scotland Island With Kids

(And before you ask—no, it doesn’t involve wearing kilts or eating haggis.)

The absolute epitome of a hidden gem, Scotland Island is situated in the Pittwater Estuary on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, home to a welcoming, vibrant, yet tiny community of just 1000 residents.

Accessible only by water via either private boat, Pink Water Taxi or ferry from Church Point Commuter Wharf, Scotland Island holds a unique air of intrigue within the context of a busy, bustling city—and kids especially will love the novelty of travelling by water to get there. Suffice to say, the island is well worth a visit. 

Here’s what we recommend doing on this tiny slice of Sydney-side serenity. 

Play Away

While we do think a trip to Scotland Island is a great, family-friendly activity, we’re not going to pretend there’s heaps to do there. Despite this, there are a whopping TWO playgrounds on this 1km-in-diameter island. 

Catherine Park is located near the Tennis Wharf and boasts a sandpit, climbing equipment, swings, a barbecue and even a few picnic tables—the perfect spot for blowing off some steam and enjoying a picnic lunch. Alternatively, Elizabeth Park is situated at the top of the island on a large bushland reserve; ideal for soaking up the peaceful tranquillity of this tiny gem.

Walks

Around the edge of the island is a public walking track, where visitors can enjoy the Pittwater Spotted Gum Forest that Scotland Island is a part of. Walking around the island usually takes around half an hour, and kids will love seeing what they can see and who they can meet along the way!

Amenities

Needless to say, the fact that there are no public toilets on the island really dictates how much time you can feasibly spend there. There’s also no shops, cafes or restaurants, which means a visit will more than likely resemble more of a quick pit stop than an immersive tour. Regardless, the ferry trip, stunning natural beauty of the island and playgrounds make it, in our very humble opinion, a great place to check out with kids!
