Where You Can Stay In A Lighthouse In NSW

By: Alex Harmon, 22 August 2019

Darling, leave the light on for me! There's something romantic about staying in a lighthouse. The cosiness, the closeness to the water, not to mention the history and the 19th-century novels that have us swept away into a fantasy. Here are five places in NSW where you can live out your Virginia Woolf dreams. BYO sleep masks.

1. Sugarloaf Point Lighthouse Keepers’ Cottages, Seal Rocks

The award-winning Sugarloaf Point Lighthouse Keepers’ Cottages at Seal Rocks were built in 1875. Today they have been carefully refurbished and offer self-contained heritage accommodation in a truly spectacular location, hidden away on the mid-north coast. Each cottage features an outdoor area from which you can enjoy breathtaking panoramas, cook up a barbecue feast or enjoy a meal with a view. Go during whale season for some extra spectacular views from your tower! Rates start from $340pn. Find out more here.

2. Assistant Lighthouse Keepers' Cottages, Byron Bay

At Australia's most easterly point you can wake up to panoramic views of the sunrise over golden beaches, coastline and the iconic Byron Bay lighthouse. With the modern comforts of today you can experience the lifestyle of former lighthouse keeper in the fully refurbished, heritage-listed cottages (circa 1901). To the lighthouse we go! Find out more here.

3. Norah Head Lighthouse, Central Coast

Just outside of Sydney these Lighthouse Keepers Quarters are within walking distance to a patrolled beach and rock pools. There are three bedrooms and sweeping verandahs; sea views from every window, a fully self-contained kitchen, lounge room and are beautifully furnished. Built in 1903, the Lighthouse remains fully functional so you can truly experience the life of a Lighthouse Keeper! Find out more here.

4. Smokey Cape Lighthouse Keepers Cottage, Hat Head

At Hat Head National Park on the mid-north coast, perched high on a headland you'll find these historic residences amongst the most elevated lighthouse on the east coast. Built in 1891 the cottages have been fully renovated and decorated in modern furnishings and fittings. Find out more here.

5. Captain's Cottage and Lighthouse, Batemans Bay

A bit of a fancy one, this luxurious 5 bedroom beach house is attached to an authentic lighthouse. It was built in 1955 as a small fisherman's beach cottage so it has a beautiful old-world charm and, staying true to the nautical theme of the Captains Cottage, an authentic and functioning lighthouse has been built and incorporated into the design of the house. This one is perfect for an extended family getaway!

If you want the real deal on the South Coast, try the lighthouse on Montague Island, 9kms off Narooma.

You can find and book more lighthouse accommodation through NSW National Parks here.
