St Catherine’s Junior School

St Catherine’s Junior School sits catching the sunshine at the top of the hill where Bronte Road meets Leichhardt Street. It is Australia's oldest independent Anglican girls' school.

It is part of the larger St Catherine’s School which has been educating girls for over 160 years. A very special part.

About 350 girls tumble into the light-filled classrooms every day. They’re excited to learn and have a sense of wonder kept alive by their dedicated and talented teachers. The school has a unique philosophy which builds on each child’s character strengths so she will know who she is at her very best. Life skills are taught from a very early age at this forward-thinking school.

Lessons are a captivating blend of explicit instruction and inquiry-based learning. Firm foundations in literacy and numeracy are laid down while keeping alive the sense of awe and eagerness to learn young children bring to school when they start. St Catherine’s has a strong STEM focus too. The junior school has a ‘tech girls’ club, a fabulous makerspace for tinkering, early robotics club and uses technology extensively in the classroom. The girls start with iPads but graduate to their own notebooks by Year 6.

St Catherine’s students learn music from Kindergarten. It has long been acknowledged music plays an important part in cognitive development. At this school the girls are singing, playing, performing and composing all the way to Year 12.

A particularly joyful part of the junior school routine is a celebration of sisterhood called Friday Friends. Each class is buddied with another class of a different age. A delightful big sister, little sister relationship grows which is so nurturing. Always someone there for a chat or a hug.

The school’s junior library is a real treasure too. You might already have a little bookworm but with so much competing for our children’s attention, some take more time to discover the joy of reading and the wonder of getting lost in stories. Not so in this school! Girls are bursting with excitement as they fill their library bags each week.

Shhhhh! Another not so well known fact is the school runs a playgroup from time-to-time. It’s a great way to have a sneak peek!
