Celebrate a European Christmas at the German Christmas Market - August 2019

Winter is here and there’s a chill in the air, the pop-up German Christmas Market is set to return on August 16th and 17th at the German International School Sydney (GISS) providing a truly unique family outing.   As dusk turns to night, the German Christmas Market is like no other, complete with market stalls featuring handmade arts and crafts, customary German festivities, eats and drinks, plus a variety of entertainment, amusement rides and novelty events.

Under a backdrop of glittering fairy lights, a dedicated children’s space will keep young visitors entertained with Magic and Puppet Shows, games galore, balloon art, face painting as well as Magic Elf and Hula Hoop Lady displays.

Little market goers can also join the spectacular lights and songs of the traditional German Lantern Walk –  after dark, hundreds of children will be guided by their colourful and luminous lanterns as they parade through the school grounds singing lantern songs in English and German.    While young and old alike will seek out the warmth and huddle around the obligatory bonfire toasting marshmallows and drinking hot chocolate.

To be held over two evenings, visitors will be able to eat their way through a cornucopia of hearty German fare and more. From authentic and national treasures including the ever-popular bratwurst, Thuringian Sausage, Kartoffelpuffer, waffles and pretzels, to an array of homemade kugelhupf cakes and sweet treats.  Adults can keep warm with a cup of traditional mulled wine at the Glühwein Hut.

Children and adrenalin junkies will have endless fun and laughter as they bound and bounce on the bungee trampoline or be entertained by the freestyle fire juggling routine.    Classic and contemporary music performances by The GISS school choir, band, drumming and dance groups will keep guests entertained, along with a special appearance on Saturday by Queensland’s Beerwah State High School 50 piece Wind Symphony band.

The German International School Sydney is encouraging Sydneysiders to embrace the winter spirit, invite family and friends and enjoy a traditional German Christmas Market.
