Harbour Trust hosts Gai-mariagal Day (FREE) in Mosman

Families are invited to celebrate –and deepen their understanding of – Sydney’s First Nations cultures on Saturday 28 May when the Harbour Trust hosts Gai-mariagal Day (FREE) at Georges Heights in Mosman, homeland of the Borogegal People.

Between 10am and 3pm, visitors to the Landship building – located in the Headland Park Artist Precinct near Frenchy’s Café – will have an opportunity to enjoy a special showcase of talented First Nations performers, educators, and traditional artists including Walangari Karntawarra.

Visiting with kids? Don’t miss the storytelling session with Uncle Larry Brandy or our boomerang painting workshop! Plus: we’ll be holding a sausage sizzle ($5 per person) to raise funds for education programs delivered by social enterprise Tribal Warrior.

Activities

Ga-mariagal Day is a fun and educational all-ages event with activities tied to this year’s Gai-mariagal Day theme: Nalawala Ngara (‘Sit down and listen’).

• 10am to 10:45am – Acknowledgement of Country – through song and in language – including a traditional smoking ceremony featuring Walangari Karntawarra. PLUS: Learn about traditional food and bush medicine through engaging presentations and a quiz.
• 10:45am to 2:45pm – Participate in the creation of an Aboriginal sand painting with artist and educator Walangari Karntawarra.
• 11am to 12pm – Active children’s storytelling with Uncle Larry Brandy.
• 12pm to 2pm – Live music performed by Green Hand Band.
• 12pm to 1:30pm – Sausage Sizzle to raise funds for Tribal Warrior’s education programs.
• 1:30pm to 2:30pm – Boomerang painting workshop with Gene Kelaher.

Background

Gai-mariagal Day at Georges Heights is being held as part of National Reconciliation Week (27 May to 3 June) and coincides with Gai-mariagal Festival. Now in its 22nd year, the festival is a key event in the annual First Nations calendar for the Northern Sydney Region. It starts on Sorry Day (26 May), runs through National Reconciliation Week, and concludes at the end of NAIDOC Week – the second week in July. 

The Harbour Trust acknowledges the Traditional Custodians and Owners of Headland Park, including Chowder Bay, Georges Heights and Middle Head / Gubbuh Gubbuh. They pay their respects the Borogegal People, including their Elders past, present and emerging.
