SCCI - Kids and Teens Workshops

Join Sherman Centre for Culture and Ideas (SCCI) for a hands-on series of workshops for children and teens. This dynamic programme aims to inspire the next generation to explore their creativity, consider sustainable practice, apply solution-driven design and engineer smarter fashion. Participants engage closely with materials and learn techniques from leading experts and specialists. Please note that places are extremely limited to encourage closely supervised and direct learning. 
 

Workshops:



The Alchemy of Colour: Children’s Workshop (8 & 9 May – 2-14 yrs & 15-17 yrs)
Join Sairi Yoshizawa, textile artist, for an introduction to the world of fabric dyeing! This workshop is held at SCCI Braelin (44-46 Lang Road, Centennial Park) on 8 May at 11am-3pm (for ages 12-14) and on 9 May at 11am-3pm (for ages 15-17). The children will take home their very own dyed scarves. All materials are provided.

What you’ll discover:

  • Learn how to forage for natural materials that will create different dyes.
  • Colour dye silk in different ways: tie-dyeing, block dyeing and dye patterning.
  • Master the ancient Japanese technique of shibori pattern making.

Pop Art Paper Dolls: Children’s Workshop (15 May – 8-12 yrs)
Graphic designer and contemporary artist, Stavroula Adameitis, brings her high-impact, neon pop-art aesthetic to the traditional world of paper dolls. This workshop is held at SCCI Braelin (44-46 Lang Road, Centennial Park) on 15 May at 11-2pm (for ages 8-12). The children will take home their very own paper doll collection designed in collaboration with artist Stavroula Adameitis.

What you’ll discover:

  • Join Stavroula as she reimagines the paper doll in fun, contemporary ways.
  • Using this vintage approach to fashion styling, play with a mix of fashion designs, eras and identities to create a bold conceptual runway.

Become An Architect For A Day: Children’s Workshop (22 May – 10-17 yrs)
Visit BVN Sydney studios and experience a day in the life of an architect! These workshops are held at BVN Sydney on Saturday 22 May at 10am-1pm (ages 10-13) and 1pm-4pm (ages 14-17). Make your very own model and see if you have what it takes to design our future world! 

What you’ll discover:

  • How architects use Virtual Reality, 3D printing and old school model making techniques to map out a new development.

Best Foot Forward: Shoe Design Children’s Workshop (23 May – 8-12 yrs)
Learn how shoe designers start from scratch when thinking of new styles! This workshop is held at SCCI Braelin (44-46 Lang Road, Centennial Park) on Sunday 23 May at 11am-3pm (ages 8-12). In this workshop children will alter and embellish shoes with rhinestones, gems, threads, dye, paint and embroidery to create a reimagined and redesigned shoe from the original. Each participant is required to bring one pair of shoes that can be embellished during the workshop.

What you’ll discover:

  • How designers approach making something simple, sparkle!
  • The history of shoe design and technical skills to embellishing shoes to last.

African Dhuku Headwrap: Children’s Workshop (29 May – 10-15 yrs)
Tracey Nyatzanza teaches the art of Dhuku: printed African headwraps! Using headscarves from prints in her very own collection, The Perfect Dawn, Tracey will help teach you the tricks of Dhuku in this fun hands-on workshop. This workshop is held at SCCI Braelin (44-46 Lang Road, Centennial Park) on Saturday 29 May at 11am-2pm. Participants will get to leave with two of their very own headscarves.

What you’ll discover:

  • You’ll learn 5-10 styles for different occasions – both casual and formal – and learn the meaning and cultural significance of each style.

Architecture Sketching: Children’s Workshop (5 June – 14-17 yrs)
Discover the tips and tricks to capturing the city via drawing! Take a private, behind-the-scenes architectural tour of reimagined historic Sydney with Brian Zulaikha (Executive Director, Tonkin Zulaikha Greer Architects) followed by an architectural sketching workshop with artist and former architect Liz Steel!

It’s easy to think that sketches of architecture have to be precise and detailed and display perfect perspective. But this is not the case! In this workshop we will learn how to capture architecture, transform 3D buildings into 2D drawings using only line and shade. The historic Kensington Street precinct is the perfect location to explore various ways of feeling edges and abstracting shapes to create lively layered sketches. The workshop is held at Old Clare Hotel on Saturday 5 June at 10am-1pm (ages 14-17).

Paper Millinery: Children’s Workshop (6 June – 8-12 yrs)
Learn the unique craft of paper art! Turn a simple piece of paper into something wearable under the guide of professional paper artist and sculptor. This workshop is held on 6 June at 11am-2pm (ages 8-12). 

What you’ll discover:
Take a simple form and transform it into something entirely different!
How to fashion something delicate into something more robust and wearable.

Build Architectural Models: Children’s Workshop (29 June – 12-14 yrs & 15-17 yrs)
Visit Smart Studios studios and learn what it takes to become an architectural model maker! The workshop is held at Smart Design Studios on 29 June at 10am-1pm (ages 12-14) and at 1pm-4pm (ages 15-17). 

What you’ll discover:

  • Explore Smart Design Studios new in house dedicated model making space.
  • Get hands on with creating wooden maquettes used to plan out a future building.
  • Be guided by Smart Design Studios architectural model maker Elizabeth Torres on how to accurately depict a space.

Museum Architecture Tour: Children’s Workshop & Tour (30 June – 12-14 yrs & 15 yrs)
Take a private, behind-the-scenes architectural tour of the newly opened Chau Chak Wing Museum! These workshops and tours are held at Chau Chak Wing Museum, The University Of Sydney, on 30 June at 10am-12pm (ages 12-14) and 1-3pm (ages 15+). 

What you’ll discover:
See areas of the museum not open to the public, such as the conservation labs, and find out how museum handle, preserve and store their objects before getting them ready to display.
Discover what it takes to design a public museum and all the elements that have to be taken into consideration to create a welcoming, exciting, safe and easy to navigate space.
