Waterfront Whale Tales

Thirty sculptural whale tails are migrating around Sydney's Western Harbour from 11 August to 24 September - and it's all free!

This 6km harbourside trail winds from the Sydney Fish Market past The Star, Australian National Maritime Museum, Darling Harbour, ICC Sydney, Chinese Garden of Friendship, Darling Quarter, SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium, Cockle Bay, past Crown Sydney, King Street Wharf, Darling Quarter, ICC Sydney, Darling Harbour, the Australian National Maritime Museum, The Star and the Sydney Fish Market. You can complete the trail in one go or enjoy multiple visits with mini-trails. 

The whale tale trail will feature thirty 2-metre tails painted by a diverse collective of artists curated by Art Pharmacy. There are some fantastic artists involved, like Archibald prize winner Blak Douglas, illustrator and animator Chris Yee, and artist, author and illustrator Sha'an d'Anthes. 

There are also great offers, discounts and prizes for visiting each tail, with a major prize also up for grabs for completing all 30 tails. 

The trail is wheelchair and pram friendly. After the event, the tail sculptures will be auctioned, with net proceeds going to The Kids' Cancer Project. 

Add your own splash of colour and creativity to your very own whale tail in the Waterfront Whale Tale colouring-in competition, presented by The Kids’ Cancer Project. There are two categories, under 6s and 7yo+.

Download the free printable Waterfront Whale Tales colouring pack and get creative at home or as you make stops along the trail. Fill in your name and age, include a parent’s or guardian’s email, then drop your completed masterpiece into one of the Whale Tales colouring competition boxes at either the SEA LIFE Aquarium or the Australian National Maritime Museum foyers to go into the draw to win one of two prize packages including family passes to SEA LIFE Aquarium, Madame Tussauds and the Australian National Maritime Museum! The competition will be drawn at 5pm on 23 September 2022 and winners will be notified by email.
