Putney Beach is Sydney’s Newest Riverside Gem

Sydney has just scored a brand-new spot to make a splash, and this one's a game-changer for anyone who's over the long drives to the coast. Putney Beach is the latest addition to the Parramatta River swim scene that promises all the fun of a beach day without the hassle of a long car ride.

Set within the stunning Putney Park, just 14 kilometres from the city, this fresh swimming site officially opens on Wednesday, 22 January 2025, and it's already making waves as the perfect spot for families to cool off and enjoy the great outdoors.

New Swim Site Opens at Putney Beach

Putney Park Beach
Putney Park Beach is officially open!

Windsor Beach, Bents Basin, Lake Parramatta, the famous 'Pondi' and now Putney Park, aka 'Panly'—we could certainly get used to Sydney opening a slew of riverside watering spots for families to cool off when the temperatures soar.

Putney Beach is the latest cab off the rank in riverside swimming spots that have undergone family-friendly transformations. So what's new?

First off, location, location, location. Sitting just 14 kilometres from the city in the heart of Putney Park, this riverside swim spot is all about convenience with a capital C.

Putney playground
Don't forget to check out the onsite playground that also has water play for the kids.

But refreshing water is not the only attraction (though, yes, it's been rigorously tested for quality, so dive in with confidence). The surrounding park is also worthy of a mention as it includes loads of family-friendly attractions, such as the super-fun playground, lush picnic spots, green open spaces (soccer, anyone?), and a launch site for kayaking, canoeing, row boats, SUPs, and other small water sports.

Is it Safe to Swim at Putney Beach?

The new beach site has undergone rigorous water quality testing to ensure it's safe for everyone to enjoy. The City of Ryde's water monitoring program, in place since 2019, ensures the water meets the same high standards as other popular swim sites along the river.

Still, it’s always good to follow some simple rules such as avoiding swimming after heavy rain or floods, avoiding dipping your head underwater if the water looks murky, and always staying aware of your surroundings, especially with little ones.

More Accessibility

Accessibility is a win here, too, with new limestone steps and handrails making it easy to get in and out of the water. There's also parking and toilet facilities on-site, so no excuses for not checking it out.

Putney Beach Opening Day

To celebrate its debut, Putney Beach is hosting an opening day launch on Wednesday, 22 January 2025 you won't want to miss. The day kicks off with a traditional smoking ceremony and speeches, setting the tone for a fun-filled event. Bring your floaties for BYO races, bop along to live music, and enjoy a classic sausage sizzle courtesy of the local scouts.

Location & Parking

Located at Pellisier Road in Putney.

Onsite and street-side parking is available but please note that council parking fees apply.
