Sydney Tramway Museum

Take a trip to Sydney’s yesteryear with a visit to the Sydney Tramway Museum, operating since 1950! Get an insight into the lifestyle of Sydneysiders during the 100 year period of tramway operation.

To this day, it remains a not-for-profit community organisation, run by dedicated volunteers.

There are stationary trams that the kids can clamber on (we LOVE the old prison carriage!) and operational trams you can board for a ride, hopping on at Railway Square Waiting Shed. The Museum also houses Sydney’s last remaining double-deck trolley-bus. Picnic facilities including electric barbecues are available on the grounds as well as a small kiosk and gift shop. Visit the Display Hall to check out Australia’s oldest electric tram, historic photos and other cool artefacts.

In addition to their regular opening hours, they frequently host special events, so check their Facebook for more. They often get involved in Steam Train Sunday where they run a Steam Train Ride from Central Station to Loftus, a tram ride to the Royal National Park, and return ride by Steam Train back to Central.

If your little one is turning into quite the history buff, is a little Thomas the Tank Engine lover or you just want to try something a bit different, we highly recommend a visit to the Tramway- especially for under 7s.
