White Rabbit Gallery & Tea House

It’s always a real pleasure to find a venue the kids will enjoy that allows you to indulge your own passions as well. If you are an art lover, White Rabbit Gallery is the place for you.

Spacious and set over 4 levels, this funky Chippendale warehouse houses Australia’s largest and most significant Chinese art collection. The entire contents of the gallery are rehung twice a year and the work is always colourful, funny and creative enough to captivate little ones’ imaginations.

Opened in 2009, the White Rabbit Gallery proudly displays one of the world’s most significant collections of Chinese contemporary art.

Dedicated to 21st-century works, the White Rabbit Collection is the brainchild of Judith Neilson. Inspired by her trips to Beijing in the late 1990s, Judith was captivated by the creative energy and technical brilliance of the art she encountered.

Her passion for sharing these works with a global audience led her to establish the gallery. Judith frequently travels to China and Taiwan to expand the Collection, which now boasts nearly 3000 works by around 750 artists and continues to grow.

The Teahouse

There is a gorgeous little Teahouse on the ground floor that serves beautiful Chinese tea, dumplings, biscuits and a kid-approved dried fruit plate. For lunch, indulge in some delicious handmade dumplings (chicken and coriander or egg and chive, with gluten-free and vegan options available) or savour mouthwatering scones, served warm with jam and cream.

If you’re unsure which tea suits your taste or mood, the staff are ready to help with recommendations. Many Chinese teas can be infused multiple times, often tasting best on the second or third steeping. They'll happily top up your pot at no extra charge until you’ve had your blissful fill—making this an absolute win in our book!

Getting There

White Rabbit Gallery is located at 30 Balfour Street, Chippendale—a short 10-minute walk from Central and Redfern train stations and the Railway Square bus terminal.

There is limited on-street 2-hour metered parking in the area. Alternatively, Broadway Shopping Centre has a car park offering the first 2 hours free of charge, a short 10-minute walk away from the gallery.
