Best Spring Flower Festivals In And Around Sydney

By: Alex Reszelska, 08 August 2019

The Dutch have an interesting saying: "If you want to be happy for a day, get drunk. If you want to be happy for a year, get married. But if you want to be happy for a lifetime, plant a garden.”

But worry not if you can’t become a gardener just yet. Spring season is coming to Australia – and with it, some amazing, colourful flower festivals to be enjoyed in and around Sydney. We’ve cherry-picked the best ones for you and your little horticulturalists to take part in. They’re all bloomtastic!

Carnival Of Colour At Hunter Valley Gardens

Spring Time in the Gardens: 1-30 September 2019
School Holiday Carnival: 28 September-13 October 2019
Rose Spectacular: 12 October-10 November 2019
Where: Hunter Valley Gardens
Cost: Adult tickets $34; Children 4-15 years $25; Family Passes from $89

This year, Hunter Valley Gardens are bringing the spring party to life with not 1 but 3 colourful events in their Carnival Of Colour celebration! From 1 September, come along to celebrate new foliage and flowers at Spring Time in the Gardens. The Gardens will
be looking their bloomin’ best with an array of spring flowers on show, including their avenue of Ornamental Plums and Cherry Blossoms, an avenue of parasols, and the Galaxy of Gnomes created by the local community.

Next up it's the School Holiday Carnival when Hunter Valley Gardens really turn up the beats! 360 ALLSTARS will be bringing their super-charged urban circus to the carnival with their break-dancers, cyr wheel world record holder, drummers and beatboxers. Plus, there will be a giant indoor ball cave featuring close to 20,000 colourful balls and the Gardens’ four incredible rides, including our Venetian carousel, 25m Ferris wheel, super speedy swing chair and giant slide.

Last on the Carnival Of Colour agenda is the Rose Spectacular - an incredible sensory explosion of colour and fragrance of 35,000 beautiful rose bushes across the property.

Spring Paper Daisies At The Australian Botanic Garden

When: 1 September - 31 October 2019
Where: The Australian Botanic Garden, Mount Annan, Sydney
Cost: FREE

Every year the horticulture team at the Australian Botanic Garden starts working in May in preparation for the annual Western Australian Paper Daisy display. Over half a million seeds are planted over the 1,700 square metre garden (the size of an Olympic swimming pool, hey!). They are then netted, fed and watered carefully, so that a few months later, in September, we can enjoy the fruits, sorry – flowers, of that skilful gardening.

The display of white, pink and yellow flowers is free and open to the public every day during the paper daisy blooming season from 8 am to 5 pm.

The Botanic Garden also features 20 km of walking tracks and green lawns, lakes, gardens, outdoor sculptures, a mountain bike track, an indoor and alfresco cafeteria, as well as a well-stocked plant and gift shop.

Tulip Time In Southern Highlands

When: 24 September - 7 October 2019
Where: Bowral, Southern Highlands, NSW
Cost: Adults: $12, children under 12: FREE, older kids: $7

Tulip Time, now in its 59th continuous year, is one of Australia's oldest and best-loved floral festivals, attracting thousands of visitors each year. In just under a two-hour drive from Sydney, you’ll find yourself literally in the middle of the colour-coordinated city-garden of Bowral, the largest town in the Southern Highlands. Corbett Gardens are the centrepiece of the Festival, with more than 75,000 tulip bulbs and 15,000 flowering annuals planted each year, but there are many more to be seen and admired in the city’s abundance of private gardens, which open for the viewings.

The horticultural festivities span across 2 weeks, with many fun activities on top of tulip displays. There are market stalls, daily music performances by local school groups, kids’ workshops and even the street parade of vintage cars. The annual Tulip Time Twilight Procession is held in the evening of 24 September to mark the arrival of Spring. Garden opening hours are 9am-4pm weekdays and until 5 pm on the weekends

Leura Gardens Festival

When: 2 weekends: 5-6 October and 12-13 October 2019
Where: Leura, NSW
Cost: Access to the gardens costs $8 for an adult (FREE for kids under 16), or $30 for an all-inclusive ticket.

Another flower festival will have you speed-journey to the picturesque Blue Mountains in October. Leura Gardens Festival is a more intimate take on a flower show extravaganza, with ten local gardens showcasing their colourful swathes of tulip beds, daffodil lawns, azaleas, rhododendrons and bluebells. Some of the gardens are nearly 100 years old, so you’ll be in for a real visual treat!

There is also a rich music program available at the festival, and all of the concerts take place outdoors in the stunning Nesuto Leura Gardens.

All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Blue Mountains District ANZAC Memorial Hospital and other local health organisations.

Floriade Festival Of Spring

When: The festival runs from 14 September to 13 October 2019, 9:30 am – 5:30 pm.

Cost: Free to enter during the day, NightFest tickets start from $13 for kids, $25 for adults.
