St Peters Fences Playground: More Than Just Swings and Slides
This one-of-a-kind playground goes beyond the usual with its inventive use of space and materials. Kids can climb, swing, and slide among structures made from recycled materials, including reclaimed local front fences. It's a vibrant blend of a traditional playground and a sculpture park, inviting children to engage in imaginative play.
A Nod to Local Charm
What sets this playground apart is its deep connection to the community's identity. The quirky retro sandstone and brickwork echo the neighborhood's character, creating an environment where children can both play and appreciate the area's unique aesthetics.
The St Peters Fences Playground was designed and constructed by artist Mike Hewson in collaboration with Inner West Council and the wider community. WestConnex CEO Andrew Head said “Students from St Peters Public School, located nearby, worked with artist Mike Hewson in the design of the playground,” Mr Head said. “Now you can see the students’ vision really come to life.”
With a contemporary artist at the helm and the all-important kids seal of approval, you know you're in for something special at this innovative and imaginative playground. Watch the construction process and hear why the kids love it:
Simpson Park is a part of the WestConnex Public Art Program, Canal to Creek, which features 18 commissioned artworks, including sculptures, play spaces, murals and immersive lighting installations within new and existing parklands.
