The Sydney Great Walk: Australia’s Greatest Urban Walking Trail

By: Rebecca Foreman, 30 January 2022

If you love pounding the pavement to take in the beauty of our glorious harbour city, then you're going to love the news that Sydney is getting a brand new urban walk and it's rumoured to be the nations greatest urban walking trail!

The Sydney Great Walk is set to be built along the Harbour foreshore from Lady Macquarie’s Chair, past the Opera House, Sydney Harbour Bridge and Barangaroo before returning to the heart of the city while showcasing some of Sydney’s most iconic tourist attractions - we can't wait!

Introducing The Sydney Great Walk

The proposed Sydney Great Walk will encompass two walking loops, (one to be completed in half a day and the other a longer full-day walk), exploring and connecting iconic Sydney hotspots such as Darling Harbour, the Chinese Garden of Friendship, Hyde Park, and the CBD in what Premier Dominic Perrottet says could become the greatest and most iconic urban walk in Australia.

The Sydney Great Walk is also set to connect with the Yananurala Walk, a project led by the City of Sydney in collaboration with First Nations representatives highlighting important Aboriginal history and culture, alongside art installations, soundscapes and enhanced infrastructure with a dining component through the CBD.

The Government has planned to investigate digital platforms as landmarks allowing for ease when walkers are planning their journey. Other ideas may include scanning QR codes at locations that would provide information to Sydneysiders, and there’s even talk of integrating the recently launched Heritage Blue Plaques program.

An Improved Sydney Landscape

Rob Stokes, Planning and Public Spaces Minister, said the proposed Sydney Great Walk will help draw Sydneysiders and tourists back into the Sydney CBD in post-lockdown times while connecting them to some of Australia’s most beautiful and recognisable places.

Premier Dominic Perrottet added that it was imperative to find new and innovative ways to improve what was sometimes simply taken for granted.

The Sydney Great Walk project will build upon other Government initiatives including the Destination NSW Renew advertising campaign that encourages people to reconnect with NSW through offerings like Sydney’s Longest Lunch and the ELEVATE Sydney celebration to be staged on the Cahill Expressway.

When Will The Sydney Great Walk Open?

Sadly, an opening date for Sydney's newest walk hasn't been set so all we can say is, watch this space!
