The Famous Bondi to Bronte Coastal Walk Is Closed

By: Tully Rosenberg, 16 April 2020

It was bound to happen. While gyms remain closed, fitness buffs would argue that this picturesque pathway is downright essential, but it appears that, despite the warnings, hoards of diehard fans just could not keep away from this coastal track - or each other.

So, alas, following the mass closure of the Eastern beaches, the famous Bondi to Bronte Coastal Walk has been officially shut down for the first time.

The blow comes from Waverley Council after heaving crowds continued to descend on the area daily, ignoring signs and defying Rangers. Locals have been lambasted for their disregard of social distancing rules that has already seen Bondi became a Coronavirus epicentre.

Waverley Mayor, Paula Masselos, said the decision was in the interest of public safety, after their pleas to find alternative places to exercise and adhere to social distancing advice were ignored. As a result, access points to the coastal walk are being closed, and signage and barricades are being put in place, to make the message loud and clear. Rangers will also be patrolling the restricted area and have authority to issue fines to anyone who trespasses.

Despite the stance, the Mayor acknowledges the crucial role exercise plays in maintaining our mental health and encourages locals to continue to get out and exercise, just on other streets and parks in the neighbourhood. They might not have the same stunning views and celebrity spotting factor as the legendary Bondi to Bronte, but you'll still get your daily dose of Vitamin D and keep those endorphins flowing.
