April School Holiday Adventures at the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney

Keep the kids busy and entertained this April school holidays with outdoor activities and creative workshops at the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney.

Garden Grubs (kids 6-12yrs)

Kids have lots of creative and active fun in the Garden with professional, enthusiastic educators! Kids spend the day exploring the garden and connecting with nature!

Monday 15 April - Autumn Garden: Make a gorgeous Autumn fold leaf banner, a dream catcher using loose plant parts and an Autumn-inspired masterpiece! Meet a plant expert, throw leaves in the air and plant in the Cryptogam house. Games, outdoor play and so much more!
Tuesday 16 April - Sensory Garden: Explore the garden using your five senses. Plant edible flowers in our Cryptogam house, play sensory bingo, try Lemon Myrtle punch and make sensory candles with essential oils. 
Thursday 18 April - Easter Garden: Chocolatey fun! Take part in the Easter hat parade, make hot cross buns, design and print your own Easter calico bag, and go on an egg hunt.

Clay Echidnas (kids 6-12yrs)

Enjoy a fun, educational, hands-on clay making experience with RBGS Indigenous Educator. Learn about the Echidna through clay making and fun games and activities. Using clay and bush materials you will be creating your very own Echidna to take home.

Herbarium on Stage – Botanist for a Day (kids 6-12yrs & their families)

Become a botanist for the day in this super fun, free, hands-on workshop! Starting at The Calyx in the heart of the Royal Botanic Garden you’ll get to:

  • Explore the Herb Garden on a sensory tour, where kids will smell, touch and taste plants that have been important to people for thousands of years.
  • Get your hands dirty in a potting session, where kids will plant their own seedling to take home.
  • Learn to create your very own plant specimen. You’ll be given a beautiful dried flower or fascinating leaf to start your very own collection of pressed plants.

Sketchbook Scavenger Hunt (kids 9-12yrs)

Get ready to get arty! Run by visiting artists from the National Art School, this workshop will teach kids how to develop their own artist sketchbook. Learn how to sketch from the world around you and build process drawings.

Dandy Lions (kids up to 5yrs & parents or carers)

Dandy Lions is a delightful morning of gardening, craft, singing and play for young children and their carers.

Join in and explore the Garden with our education staff for specially designed activities for children under the age of five, such as:

  • Garden activities including planting and harvesting
  • Nature-based art and craft
  • Lively, interactive storytelling
  • Songs, music and dance
  • Garden discovery walks
  • Playtime and fun!

The Great Garden Egg Hunt (kids 3-8yrs & families)

The Easter Bunny is coming to the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney on Saturday and Sunday of the Easter long weekend! Children use a trail map to complete fun challenges, collect chocolate eggs and hunt for their furry Easter friend.

Following the trail, children will move around the beautiful gardens between five activities which are egg or bunny related. There will also be a family photo opportunity at the end with the Easter Bunny so bring your camera!
Come and join in the festivities and enjoy some good old-fashioned fun!

When:    Easter Saturday & Sunday, 20 & 21 April 2019; times vary.

Feeding Time at Plants with Bite! 

Delve into the fascinating world of carnivorous plants and have your chance to get up close with these creepy and weird specimens. Learn about the evolution of carnivorous plants, the different trap types and how they go about catching their prey.

Set within The Calyx which is showing the Plants With Bite display that houses a colossal collection of carnivorous plants, you have the chance to get up close and personal with a range of trap types. The educator will demonstrate a simple experiment and will give you your own Venus fly trap and crickets to feed it. You will also have the opportunity to attach a digital microscope to your smartphone and capture close up pictures of the traps in action. The session will end with you being given your own edible cricket to gobble up and try!

Children under 4 can accompany an adult ticket for free.
Children under 13 must purchase a children's ticket and be accompanied by an adult who has an adult ticket.

Tinkerbell & The Dream Fairies

In Tinkerbell and the Dream Fairies, the adventurous Tinkerbell happens upon the fairies from A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Together, the cheeky Mustardseed, fluttery Moth, daring Cobweb and sweet Peaseblossom all go on a magical quest with Tinkerbell, learning about each other and the different worlds they come from. Come dressed up for fun either as a Fairy or an Elf but Jedi’s, Pirates and all superheroes are all welcome!

When:    13-28 April 2019 
Cost:      Sunday - Thursday, tickets: $25, or $80 (group of 4), and Friday - Saturday, tickets: $30.00 each or $110 (group of 4)
