Sydney Observatory
Sydney Observatory is both a public observatory and a museum, showcasing an amazing collection of instruments, artifacts, books and photos. Wander through the display rooms to discover the history of astronomy and weather watching in Australia.
After exploring the displays inside the Observatory, experience the amazing 3-D Space Theatre and telescope viewing (weather permitting). A night telescope viewing session is the quintessential Sydney Observatory experience and perfect for a family outing. (Bookings required). Keep an eye on The Observatory’s website’s Special Events for family friendly evening events like pizza and stargazing nights!
You can also book The Observatory for birthday parties for 7-12-year-olds, and excellent daily programs run during holidays.
While the exhibits and telescope are really geared for primary school age children and up, the under fives should enjoy the sparkly 3-D Space Theatre and exploring the historic building and grounds.
Ellaslist opinion: The Sydney Observatory sits on Observatory Hill, overlooking the Harbour and is worth a visit for the views alone. School-age kids will enjoy the hands-on exhibits and the telescope viewing. The Observatory’s museum might be a bit underwhelming for active under fives, but as admission is free, it’s definitely worth a look in and they are sure to enjoy the 3D cinema experience ($7 for adults, $5 children). For a special, past bedtime treat, we would definitely recommend the night viewings, especially on a warm summer night. Combine your visit with a picnic in the beautiful grounds, a wander around Millers Point and a walk to the Rocks – a great way to introduce your little one to Sydney’s rich history.
Admission: Free during the day – but does not include visits to the telescope towers, telescope viewings and 3D theatre sessions. See website for details of session times and costs.
