Secret Sydney: Congwong Beach
Here at ellaslist, it's common knowledge that we love ourselves a secret Sydney spot—and we think we've found a gem in Congwong Beach in La Perouse. A lesser-known gem of the Botany Bay National Park area, this secluded spot is small in size but packs the perfect punch for families.
Here's everything you need to know about visiting Congwong Beach with the fam-bam.
Secret Sydney: Congwong Beach
How Do You Get to Congwong Beach?
Located in La Perouse, Congwong is situated close to the Anzac Parade entrance to the Kamay Botany Bay National Park. There is parking at nearby Cann Park and around the Anzac Loop, which is roughly a five-minute walk to the beach.
There are bus routes that go to Cann Park, and there is ample parking—however, it fills up quickly on weekends and during school holidays so you'll want to arrive early to secure your spot!
Things To Do
Congwong is south-facing towards Botany Bay, making the waves super gentle (and virtually non-existent at times), plus, it's pretty shallow until several metres out, which makes it the perfect spot to wade and splash around with kids.
In terms of water sports, there's no surfing at this bay because of the lack of waves, but there are plenty of snorkelling opportunities. Nearby Bare Island is a favourite in the area for scuba divers—while the beach's proximity to Cape Banks' protection makes it an ideal place to snorkel and explore the local sea life; for kids and adults alike. We're talking sea horses, giant cuttlefish, moray eels, and sea dragons, just to name but a few.
There are also some fishing opportunities towards the western end of the beach at the small headland that separates Congwong and its cousin Little Congwong. There are also a few hiking spots within the national park along the coastline for families with older kids—all boasting spectacular views and wildlife sightings.
Are There Amenities Nearby?
We know, we know—secret spots are all well and good but can you actually spend a day there? Luckily at Congwong, you can!
There are toilets, rubbish bins, and a few decent food options—there are several cafes and restaurants situated outside of the national park near the parking loop. And if that isn't enough, a boat shows up most weekends with cold drinks and ice creams for sale—which always makes a nice treat for the kids (and grown-ups!).
Why We Love It Here
With easy-to-paddle waters, plenty of things to do, and a relatively unknown reputation, it’s not hard to see why Congwong Beach is a new favourite for the ellaslist team. The bounty of local wildlife and excellent vistas of the local area (and not to mention the boat that brings ice cream!), all make for a memorable family day out.
